“You know we can’t make any more of these?” the medic sighed, pointing to the nanobot repair vials. Taylor had to threaten him before the medic admitted even having them. They were worth a small fortune on the black market.

“Just shut up and do it, doc.” Taylor wasn’t about to go away empty handed. The doctor had failed to dissuade Taylor, who once again leveraged the weight of his detective badge. The good medic felt these precious nanobots were reserved for High Generals, Chancellors, Heads of State, etc. The medic considered the wavering needle full of nanobot solution before cramming it into Taylor's shoulder. Taylor smiled at the pinch. This was more like himself. Getting his way, not caring what people thought. The injection warmed and vibrated like an old battery.

"My rib still hurts," Taylor mocked, scratching at the back of his head.

"It takes time," the medic snapped. Taylor was already grabbing his jacket. He hated the smell of sterile surfaces. He made sure to leave the door open as he left.

It took a few hours but eventually he could walk without a limp and twist at the waist a bit. Most importantly his face tingled as little bots stimulated cell regeneration. That was good, he didn’t need a scar ruining his winning smile. The rest was up to good old fashioned healing, nanobots had a short cell life and the little things ended up as kidney fodder. The body took over after their little jump start.

That afternoon he returned to the precinct. Ayne had been released due to an administrative error. Funny how things worked out. Commander Keeb still hadn’t called, that almost worried Taylor. Yesterday still didn't seem real, he’d have called it a dream if not for the pain. He should be dead but today it was like nothing ever happened. If there was a moral here he'd probably forget it by dinner. He knew one thing; a killer was still loose in this city, and Taylor was the only one who would stop him. He didn’t know his next step, but he knew his best ideas came to him while cruising.

So Taylor rode the lightrail transits to nowhere specific. He stopped and worked a vending machine to grab puffed cheese snacks and then roamed some more. The transits swelled with commuters, an unfortunate blend of colognes and hair gels crowded the seats next to him. He didn’t know where to go, except that he didn’t want to be in the office. He didn’t really have a home now that Vina had kicked him out. Taylor was surprised at how he felt about that, he didn’t care once, not until she did it. Now he almost missed her.

A fatherly man wearing glasses stared at Taylor. Taylor noticed him three stops ago, he never saw the man before but that didn't keep the man from staring. Taylor finally stared back, wondering what was up. The man wore a gold wristwatch, nothing electronic, just elegant and classic. Whatever else this man was, he was interested in Taylor.
